Red Devils split doubleheader with East Bladen
The Red Springs Red Devils baseball team traveled to Elizabethtown on Tuesday, April 28, and split a Southeastern Conference doubleheader with the Eagles of East Bladen High.
In the first game, the Red Devils nipped East Bladen by a score of 4-3.
In the second game, the Eagles sprinted out to score five runs in the second inning and then held on for a 5-3 win over the Red Devils. The Red Devils (7-14) put three runs on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, but couldn’t place any more across the plate.
Lose to Fairmont
The Red Devils baseball team dug themselves into a hole in the first inning and allowed visiting Fairmont to score four runs and then let them go on to hand them a crucial 10-2 Southeastern Conference loss.
The Golden Tornadoes scored two more runs in the next two innings before the Red Devils could get one run across the plate in the bottom half of the third inning.
The Red Devils got only three hits off starting pitcher Justin Britt on the evening.
“We didn’t pitch it, we didn’t hit it, and we didn’t play very good defense,” said Red Devils’ baseball coach Bryan McDonald. “Fairmont’s a heck of a baseball team. We’ve got to be perfect to hang around with that crowd and we weren’t perfect tonight and that what you’re going to get, a 10-2 ballgame. We could have held it a little tighter if we had played a little bit better defense.”
It was the last home game of the 2009 season for the Red Devils, who played West Bladen last night and will play at St. Pauls on Thursday, looking for a way to gain that elusive third state 2-A playoff spot.
It was also the last home game in Red Devils uniform for three seniors, Chris Gales, Jamison Leach and Jeffery McMillan.
The Flora Macdonald Academy Cougars baseball team dropped a 17-2 decision to Trinity Christian Monday, April 27.

Tyler Tew took the loss for the Cougars.
In boys’ tennis, Fayetteville Christian, 9-0, blanked the Cougars.
With the loss, Flora Macdonald dropped to 1-8 on the season.
