Hit hole, win car.

With apologies to the Durham Bulls baseball team (whose outfield sign

famously promises “Hit Bull, Win Steak”), that might be the theme for

the 2010 Dr. Art Bruneau Golf Tournament and Scholarship Fundraiser Aug. 10 at North Carolina State University’s Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh.

The inaugural Bruneau Golf Tournament was held last year to observe the

retirement of Dr. Art Bruneau, a long-time N.C. State professor whose

specialty was turfgrass. That first tournament raised $4,500 for a

scholarship fund at N.C. State. Proceeds from the second tournament –

the entry fee is $100 – will also go to the scholarship fund.

This year, players will have five chances to win a car, said Emily Erickson, a lecturer in N.C. State’s Department of Crop Science and a tournament organizer. Parks Chevrolet, which has dealerships in Charlotte, Huntersville and Kernersville, agreed to provide five new cars that will go to the first player with a hole-in-one on any of the

course’s five par three holes.

Tournament winners will receive gift certificates from the Lonnie Poole

Golf Course. The tournament will also include a putting contest that will feature the chance to sink a 60-foot putt and win $5,000.

If a golfer does sink the 60-foot putt, $5,000 will also be donated to the

scholarship fund. Both the putting contest and a cook out and awards ceremony following the tournament are sponsored by Weed Man lawn care service.

Golfers may also win golf clubs, a golf bag and other prizes in a number

of closest-to-the-pin contests. Golfers who wish to play in the tournament may register online at www.TurfFiles.ncsu.edu/BruneauGolf

Tim Kreger, Carolinas Golf Course Superintendent Association director, will serve as tournament

director.
